Time: (doors open at 5:30 ) start time 6:15 P:M
Join us for an old fashioned Box Social lunch at Simpson Road (doors
open at 5:30 ) start time 6:15 P:M We're inviting whole families to
attend, so there will be a few variations from the old fashioned way
we use to hold Box Socials (wherein the fella bids on a basket and
sits with the gal who brung it!)
Our Plan:
Every family participating brings a "box" or basket containing
lunch-dinner type meal enough for 2 people, If you are bringing your
children, let them make a child's basket for 2 children and they can
share with another. Each basket is to be anonymous / unidentified to all but the owner
and buyer ( after purchase). However, each should contain on the Outside a short descriptive note
saying contents of the inside, and a general description of the
contents i.e. ham or chicken, salad or casserole , sandwiches etc.
This way the auctioneer has enough information to do a great selling
job! (The owner you, put YOUR name on the inside of the basket to
get back any contents you wish back) and also the buyer knows who to
share the contents with.
Box Lunch Suggestions:
Should contain a main course, a dessert and possibly some rolls and
butter Juice or Tea or Coffee to drink Likely best to have cold
things since warming things up could delay the proceedings. That's
right, the baskets will be auctioned by none other than our Resident
Auctioneer, Henry Hall, Starting bid is $1.00 Bidding will be done
on each basket to a maximum of $50.00 We encourage all community
members to participate. We will have other Entertainment such as
dancing to the music of Pine Grove Ramblers. Jigging by Our One and
only Lisa Sheperd.
START TIME : Doors open 5:30 P.M.
Prayer Time : 6:15 P.M.
BIDDING Start Time : After prayers , OR 6:15 P.M. to
6:45--7:00 P.M.
Dinner Time : 6:45 P.M. To 7:45 P.M. ( OR) after you win your basket
and locate the basket owner to dine with.
Honoring Time: Surprise for Special Persons and Jiggers Entertaining
Dancing Time : 8:30 P.M. 10:30 P.M.
Box Social Instructions:
STEP 1. Choose a healthy variety of food for your Basket. Beyond
your main meat or protein-based dishes, a healthy selection of side
dishes will make it a more delicious event. Not all salads have to
be laden with fattening mayonnaise and made with carbohydrates like
pasta and potatoes.
If you do make potato or pasta add healthful food to the mixture and
look for lower calorie dressing.
Best to put ingredients in separate little baggies or dishes , as
some persons have an allergy to such items as Onions, Nuts to name a
few.
This way they can help themselves to what they can eat. And remember
if you are using Mayonnaise to also use a cold Pac. Sandwiches can
be a Healthy alternative to portions of meat .
STEP 2. Make side dishes with lots of color. Nutritional experts say
that the more color you have on your plate when it comes to fruits
and vegetables, the more vitamins and nutrients you will get. Go for
recipes that use plenty of colorful vegetables. Change recipes by
adding extra colorful vegetables. If your recipe calls for a bell
pepper, use two or more bell peppers of different colors, for
example.
STEP 3. Swap regular dressing for low calorie options in your
recipes or exchange mayonnaise for yogurt or fat-free sour cream.
If you want a mayonnaise flavor, consider halving the amount of
mayonnaise and topping up with lower fat alternatives.
STEP 4. Replace cooking and salad oils with healthy fats like olive
oil or coconut oil and use sparingly. Consider using a spritzing
bottle for oil based dressings instead of pouring it.
Food Safety :
1. Bring plenty of ice to keep food cold. Many baskets are not
equipped to handle ice as they're made with bamboo or rattan so the
basket itself can be good for your dry and non-perishable goods and
a cooler bag or box is better for transporting food that can spoil.
This will keep food fresh and safe, longer.
2. Eat food with mayonnaise in it within an hour to two hours after
it is removed from the cold environment. Many insulated cooler bags
are available for small dishes to pack within a larger cooler and
this can be a good idea to prevent food spoilage or food poisoning.
3. Keep raw and cooked meats safely separated. While they both need
to be kept cold, they should be well packaged so that there isn't
cross contamination of meat juices into something cooked like fried
chicken or cold cuts.
4. Wash your hands frequently, especially when preparing food. Bring
either antiseptic hand wipes or a gel for cleaning your hands
without water. Washrooms may have limited room
5.Wash and prepare fruits and vegetables before you leave if
preparing any of your dishes while at your BOX Social. You don't
know if you'll have access to running water and saving time by doing
this ahead of time can enhance your experience.
6. Don't use the same plate twice, especially when dealing with
meat. Bring plenty of plastic dishes or disposable paper plates with
you. If bringing reusable dishes, be sure to have an extra bag to
store dirty dishes for transport home. Don't save meat marinade.
Whatever isn't used to baste the meat with while cooking should be
discarded for reduction of bacteria.
